NATCHITOCHES – Northwestern State University will host an acknowledgement of Patriot Day on Friday, Sept. 11 in which students, faculty, staff and the community are invited to gather at the flagpoles between the Student Services Center and Caspari Hall to observe a moment of silence in memory of the 2,977 individuals killed in the 2001 September 11 terrorist attacks.
Northwestern State’s ROTC cadets will lower the flag to half-mast as the bell tolls at 8:46 a.m., the time at which the hijacked American Airlines Flight 11 was crashed into the North Tower of the World Trade Center. Bell tolls will also take place at 9:03 a.m., the time at which United Airlines Flight 175 was crashed into the South Tower of the World Trade Center; at 9:37 a.m., the time at which American Airlines Flight 77 was crashed into the Pentagon, and at 10:07 a.m., the time at which United Airlines Flight 93 crashed into a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania.
“September 11 is nationally recognized as a day of service and remembrance,” said Frances Conine, dean of students. “Whether or not you are able to attend the flag lowering or are present on campus to hear the bell tolls, we hope that Americans will pause for a moment of silence or voluntary prayer.”

06-01-2015: LACEY SEALS NAMED NEW SAB LEADER
After two years, the Student Activities Board sees a fresh face as president.....By Jasie Eubanks
Natchitoches, LA – As per usual, SAB hosted its annual end-of-the-year banquet to say goodbye to old members and swear in new members.Something is different this year though. Alayni Guidry said goodbye to the Student Activities Board after serving two years as president and in several other positions before that. She passes the torch to Lacey Seals.
Seals, a senior business administration major from New Orleans, La., joined the Student Activities Board in fall 2013. 2014-2015 SAB President Alayni Guidry passes down the gavel and swears in Lacey Seals.
“I wanted a chance to get more involved and meet new students,” Seals said. “I really wanted the chance to become a contributing member of the Northwestern State University community. I thought that joining a board that gets to plan every major event would be the perfect fit.”
Seals started off, like most people, as a representative-at-large. This is the first position in the Student Activities Board with committee heads coming next and then executive members. “I was at the bottom of the totem pole,” she said. “As I advanced in SAB, I figured that I had the qualities and gained the leadership experience to be president. I grabbed the bull by the horns and went for it.”
Demetri Hill, SAB Public Relations and Advertising chair, has personally seen Seal’s growth. “SAB is a place where leaders are born,” he said. “I joined the board with Lacey, and now she is president. I’m so proud of her and know she will be the best predecessor to Alayni.”
She didn’t just advance from representative to president though. Hers was a journey. Seals served this past semester as the Special Events Coordinator, in charge of one of SAB’s most anticipated events – Vegas Night.
As president, Seals will oversee the board as a whole. She will run board meetings as well as executive meetings weekly. Her main job is to make sure the board is functioning cohesively and that everyone completes their respective jobs.
Seals said of her plans as president: “My main priority is to continue to encourage students to come to open board meetings to express their ideas and opinions. Member retention is something that is important internally. I also plan and encourage students to talk to the source as opposed to taking their problems to social media.”
Kaymin Carter, Student Activities Board Treasurer, believes Seals is the right person to tackle these past issues and move the organization forward as a whole.
“I think that having a fresh face for the Student Activities Board will be something much needed,” he said. “The last president was great, but a new one may help us finally get to exactly where we want to be – a board that does its best for the students, and is appreciated for the effort.”
Seals knows that her position does come with issues, but at the root of it all, she is motivated by a love for what she does.
What is Lacey Seals favorite thing about SAB? Planning events for the students by the students.
“Isn’t it the reason we all joined the board in the first place? Planning quality events for our student body will always be SAB’s number one priority, regardless of who is president,” she said.
My name is Taylor Walker, your 2015 Miss Northwestern Lady of the Bracelet. One of the exciting opportunities the Miss Louisiana Scholarship Organization offers is the chance to raise funds for local children’s hospitals through Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals.
The money I raise will help save children’s lives, and a portion will also go to support the Miss America Scholarship Fund.Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals makes sure that donated funds stay local which means that your donation helps kids and families right here in our community.
